27. How am I doing?

If we truly want to become the best we can be – in any field of endeavour – then we need someone who can tell us, openly and honestly, how we’re doing.

If you wish to succeed you need frequent feedback. We have areas where we know exactly what our strengths and weaknesses are, but we do our best to hide the weaknesses because we want to pretend that we’re better than we are. And we have areas where we’re blind or just have an inaccurate picture of how we are. So, it’s not always easy to receive really open and honest feedback from others, especially if it’s not what you want to hear or conflicts with your perception of yourself.

If you want to know how good a parent you are, your children are the best people to tell you how you’re doing. Have you ever asked them what sort of parent you are and what they’d like you to do differently so that they feel more enabled to become even better family members or individuals? You may be surprised by what they tell you.

In many ways the skill and openness to ask people to tell you how you’re doing is probably the most important thing you can develop. It’s certainly the most courageous, and you’ll undoubtedly hear things that you don’t like, don’t want to hear and will violently disagree with. You’re likely to want to defend yourself and explain why you did things the way you did. But don’t! To tell a boss that he’s not managing you as effectively as he could for whatever reason is not likely to be easy the first time.

If each and every one of us took 100% responsibility for being the best we can be, then asking how we’re doing would become a way of life. Change the way you communicate and be open to all that you hear.

Here’s an idea for you

Ask your children how they see you as a parent. Also ask how they’d like you to change, and ask your team at work the same. If people won’t tell you anything then you’re either perfect or they’re scared of you!

Defining idea

‘We judge ourselves by what we think we are capable of. Others judge us by what we have already done.’
